Mariana Da Cruz's bossa nova

Mariana Da Cruz sang bossa nova in a Lisbon club when he met the director and hacker electro-industrial Ane H, guitarist and percussionist Oliver Husmann Pit Lee. Done bossa; São Paulo singer then plunged into a completely different culture broth.

With his Swiss colleagues, it incorporates elements of musica popular brasileira, particularly the samba funk. Unless the Portuguese expression, the rest of this scattergun approach has nothing to do with Brazil priori Da Cruz touches the new wave, synth punk, kuduro (Electro Angola), rock rumba, reggae, disco and more.

Four albums testify to this mixing, the very generous Disco E Progresso, designed in two parts: the "bright" is light, disco funk or even reggae dancehall; the "dark" is sought, deeper, darker actually.

Stevie Wonder's soul in Rotterdam

North Sea Jazz Festival, the master of the soul made an almost faultless Saturday apart from featuring Joss Stone. The day before, Pharell Williams had merely the bare minimum.
The huge site exhibition reminds Rotterdam airport. From a central aisle, you can take one of twelve rooms (all covered) concert, the largest (Nile, 12 000 places) small places for a few tens of fans. What makes the originality of the North Sea Jazz Festival, this is the opportunity to spend 5 minutes of gigantism in intimacy.
Founded in 1975 in The Hague, the event has moved in this enclave the port of Rotterdam in 2006. Weekend, showing the proposed NSJF Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Chic, Bootsy Collins, Al Jarreau, Dr. John ... And to jazz itself, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran, John Scofield, Gregory Porter, Pharoah Sanders, Chucho Valdés, Martial Solal and dozens of others. All in three days, from 17 pm to 1 am. Some 25,000 spectators per night, and all packages were sold before the opening on Friday.

Pharrell Williams is it jazz? No, of course. Soul? No more. But opening all black music gives citizenship commercial r'n'b singer whose producer is the world number 1, with his cartoons in 2013: Get Lucky Daft Punk and Blurred Lines of Robin Thicke, he was involved, and his own hit Happy. The least we can say is that the artist has not ruined his tour to mount: innocuous projections by way of decor, but fagotées competent dancers as the most spectacular element of paupers ... show is his hat scout. The low cost set lasts an hour, during which he recites his success on a chopped beat, a very limited falsetto voice. Nice and smiling, he has all but gifted student supporter of least resistance. Expected to be better? Frankly not.

Boubou. The giant screen under a spectator sitting in a corner of the stage: Stevie Wonder. Pharrell Williams brings in the spotlight after two songs. "Wow, I can not believe it, this is Stevie in person," he says. And add, rogue in likely reference to accusations singing on tapes recorded after his performance at Montreux: "Whatever one thinks of my music, I have at least the satisfaction of having Stevie Wonder with me . Proof that I'm not so bad, right? "That's it, get smart.

The next day, Stevie Wonder has not returned the favor to his colleague, already gone. The same room seems more filled with an audience where sexas fifties and are well represented. Boubou in shiny, shaven except for thin braids hang it very low in the back, the Moses of soul music starts at guitar keyboard with a cover of Marvin Gaye: How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You), in a version of longuette where he blackmails the public. Master Blaster and Higher Ground are raising the temperature, but the rocket is not launched yet. What happens with another cover, Beatles Day Tripper, powered by a group in a state of grace: four singers (one male), a drummer and two percussionists, only two horns (trumpet and sax) but who harvest a monster job . Maestro and keyboards.

Three quarters of an hour following are magical: 64, Stevie Wonder can get away with that voice heat and flexibility intact. The 60s (Signed, Sealed, Delivered ...), 70 (Sir Duke, Do not You Worry 'bout a Thing) and 80 (Overjoyed) parading in a dizzying sequence. A shiver of emotion runs through the crowd with the ballad You and I.

And suddenly blunder: it announces a special guest, the blonde Joss Stone, who took the stage just before him. The British, revealed by a talent show there ten years, is best known in Northern Europe than here. With a powerful voice, stereotypical and lacking emotion, she accompanies the master on Living for the City. When the duo wrap to Ebony & Ivory, it's even worse: the "perfect harmony" which is the song turns into a bad joke. After a strange interlude where Stevie tries with his percussionist Fausto Cuevas, the Peruvian cajón, back to tubes for the final fireworks: Part-Time Lover, I Just Called to Say I Love You and Superstition, with its riff devilishly funky. It is 1am, giant screens give schedules last buses and subways, and the floor is sticky Nile hectoliters of beer spilled.

"Finale". Starting a little slow and error of course do not tarnish the splendor of the concert. Behind the scenes, the communications director of the North Sea, Junior van der Stel, told us last visit Stevie. "It was in 2010, a Sunday, and we had not planned that day, the selection of Netherlands Bays play the final of the World Cup football! A significant event, we were obliged to broadcast. Stevie Wonder had agreed to postpone his concert in an indefinite time, because of possible extensions and penalties. We lost, and her concert put balm on our wounds. "

Saturday, by a strange orange chance, Stevie Wonder concert coincided with another match of the Netherlands, for third place in the World Cup, but everyone did not care. The world champion on Saturday night, it was Stevie well. After singing Jazz in Vienna Monday, the icon of the soul will be Wednesday at the Montreux Festival where, incredibly, it has never happened and will make a stop Friday on the Côte d'Azur, Juan-les-Pins.

Music decline, myth or reality? By Nicolas Asselin Desbiens

The decline of the music industry? "Blame the illegal downloading, of course," "Internet, this is the reason" and so on.

Who has not had the opportunity to hear and perhaps even to utter such words during a debate on this issue? Majors, artists, surfers, everyone went to his views, his certainty, extolling or otherwise criticizing the Hadopi law fire, symbol of cleavage music / web industry. The latter, recall it quickly, was supposed to penalize download peer-to-peer when it does not respect the rights of authors of works downloaded.

Now that the law is dead and buried, before even really existed, it is time to take stock.

First things first: What is "music industry"? Very often, it is considered that this industry is limited to the record sales. An overview can realize that even within this industry exist as diverse as the production of the musical work, the live and related rights activities. Often, too, there is a tendency to equate music majors and industry. Even if they are now unavoidable, it should not be forgotten that alongside these huge machines exist labels and independent artists.

Second thing: No, illegal downloading did not kill the music industry, but yes, the Internet has changed the way we consume music, up to create new economic and artistic patterns.

Finally, we are reassured that the majors do not wear too badly.

The music industry is not dead

Some figures and studies will allow us to see a little more clearly. A study by the European Commission made an econometric modeling of consumer Internet music to define the links between illegal downloading, streaming and legal consumption of legal online shopping. Against all odds, the conclusion of this study shows that the majority of the music downloaded from peer to peer users would not necessarily have been a legal purchase. Each illegal downloading is not necessarily lost for unsold artist. It would even stimulate the market for album sales. In Norway, the illegal downloading collapses to other modes of consumption, legal, music with subscriptions and streaming (Spotify, Rdio ..). The specter of illegal downloading away, the music industry can catch his breath.

If it is based on the 2013 sales figures of music, we see that the world market appears to be increasing since 1998. Again, this is surprising, since it is ultimately the opposite of the prevailing discourse. Indeed, the decline is stronger for market sales of physical albums, and certainly these numbers is based the majority of communications alleging an alarming situation. It is noted, however, that increases in other revenue sources echo this decline: the explosion of digital sales (0.4 billion in 2004 to $ 5.8 billion in 2012) and concerts are as significant (see diagram below).

The media consumption is changing and the market has adjusted, offsetting some of the losses of the physical market by developing other income, including digital.

This is the end of a certain music industry

What was the basis for the overthrow of this area is the dematerialization of music and its use as a file. MP3 has completely changed consumer behavior. Now we pecks pieces was a more superficial listening without necessarily see the value of physical "album" object. Of course, there are always purists who listen to the first to the last song of an album remains something sacred and considers that an album cover is comparable to a work of art . These are, however, increasingly rare, and the listener is now seen primarily as a consumer of tracks.

Besides downloading, streaming is also exploding. A recent study showed that 78% of French Internet users regularly visited sites streaming for listening to music. This enthusiasm can be explained largely by the free but also ease. Typing the name of an artist, song and in the next second, you can access the broadcast of the song sought. This new way of listening to music has also helped redistribute the cards in this industry. Sites such as Spotify and Deezer are now key players, attracting daily benefit of subscribers (in March 2013, Spotify had 6,000,000). However, some artists such as Thom Yorke, singer of Radiohead, do not hesitate to criticize this type of platform, considering that only music "mainstream" is broadcast and especially that artists are not paid enough.

And majors in?

We have seen above, the majors do not seem to suffer that much of the digital explosion. They still occupy more than 71% of the market sales of music production. After some resistance, the gossips say a certain stubbornness, they ended up taking consience Internet was not pure evil. Response to illegal downloading is made on the ground of legal offers: partnership with digital distribution platforms (Apple and iTunes), streaming (Spotify, Deezer) but also with video platforms (Youtube and Dailymotion representative now a significant market share of the digital distribution).

Problem, there is again a hegemony of majors and major distributors. The market is dominated today by Itunes for download and streaming for Deezer, being fed by their offer catalogs of more majors. We are witnessing an imbalance in the market, forcing smaller broadcasters out of business, as was the case for Jiwa in 2010. Involved In particular, the difficulties of negotiating broadcast rights with Warner.

The emergence of new patterns for independent

Not only the digital did not kill the majors, but it was an excellent opportunity for the rise of independent groups. Thanks to digital and internet, there may be much less intermediate between artists, actors music market and the public. All stages of the life cycle of an album are impacted by these changes and independents have this opportunity to grow.

The development of digital tools and studio homes to create an album at a much lower cost than 10 years ago, providing the opportunity for a large number of independent artists to create an album.

Must still manage to attract attention, make themselves known and stand out. Indeed, the arrival of all these creations saturates the market, it is the reverse of the medal. Lack of available financial resources majors for their communication plan, groups all use the internet assets to reach their audience. We are witnessing the development of strategies including community management to unite the public around the artist. These methods already existed before internet through clubs such fans. However, the web provides great proximity to the dissemination of information almost directly to fans, and around the world. A Twitter and Facebook coupled with the provision of digital content site (Youtube videos, photos, TweetMySong ..) can be very interesting for viral digital communication, and thus integrates a user experience dimension multi canale.

Financing already existing subscription with fans, but with the internet era, crowdfunding has taken on a new dimension. The phenomenon is such that the Minister Fleur Pellerin (Minister Delegate to the Minister of Productive Recovery) has presented a reform intended to help the development of crowdfunding platforms while protecting benefit investors. If you want to summarize in a few words the principle of crowdfunding, it is possible for an artist, group, getting finance his album, his song by users. Some crowdfunding platforms have now become very popular, this is particularly the case with My Major Company or Kiss Kiss Bank Bank.

conclusion

To conclude, we can say that digital has been a revolution in the music industry. Its development is accompanied by opportunities and issues, as well as the arrival time of the cassette, or CD, which raised the same concerns about the end of the music market as we know it. And if that was finally able to adapt to new possibilities and modes of operation? It turns out that the small labels were more reactive than the majors, and that independent actors were able to find more opportunities in this new configuration.

Music has never been so active, it is undergoing a revolution.

Another Cyrus scandal! How many weeks before a sextape?

NBC this Sunday's controversial video capture Bangerz Tour Miley Cyrus. A choice of programming surprises for conventional television in the United States.

When NBC confirmed that Cyrus and her leotards indented landed on its airwaves Sunday, July 6, several flinched. And for good reason. Anyone who has spent the last year on Earth knows how Miley Cyrus wants to create on stage. Since its passage at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, the star of 21 years puts escapades. His twerking and suggestive gyrations with his big finger Styrofoam you shocked? You do not have anything.
In his tour, Cyrus wears a jersey with printed pot leaves, projecting images of candy shaped genitals, gets (not innocently) a giant hot dog, mime fellatio and spreads her legs thoroughly. Thousands of spectators were at the Bell Centre on March 29 can attest.

Faced with this avalanche of times classified as "16 and over", a question arises: NBC will show what? The reluctance of American viewers are known to face too sexy for prime time sequences. CBS was impacted by breast Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl for eight years ...

Cutting room

Of course, NBC will mount the provision of Cyrus, but after removing all segments likely to offend, we will find ourselves with a show of 15 minutes?

NBC has already experienced such a situation. In 2006, she released a watered down version of Madonna Confessions Tour. To pressure from religious groups, NBC had cut a large number of the concert, one where Madonna appears crucified during the song Live To Tell.

Beyond scandal

Despite the plethora of so-called "shocking" extracts, the artistic director of Bangerz Tour, Diane Martel, insists the video recording of the show Miley Cyrus emphasize first and foremost his vocal talent. "His performance in this special issue is flawless," said she told Billboard.

Viewers will also see footage behind the scenes. "We see Miley as she really is in private, very kind, gentle, loving and fun, said Diane Martel. She describes her evolution during the last year. These extracts help us realize how Miley is an intelligent and thoughtful person. "

"It was truly amazing what happens to me and I was eager to talk. I expect it for several years. I could not be happier, "said the Journal singer-songwriter.

Bazini is well aware that he still has much work ahead to make a name in the highly competitive U.S. market. It should include participation in a showcase in Los Angeles in a few weeks.

"I'm leaving early. But Rich and Capitol Records, I feel really confident. I have a good team behind me and it's a great opportunity, "says the young man who is ready to settle in the United States to become better known.

The same manager Mika

Rich with Bazini talking about is Rich Isaacson, his American manager that has found it Universal, its Canadian label at the beginning of the year.

Thanks to Isaacson, which launched the career of Wu-Tang Clan and looked after the interests of Mika, if Bazini could get in a few weeks this record contract. Sometimes an artist can take months, even years, before being signed.

"Rich is associated with Capitol, so they listened to his album soon. They liked his voice as the quality of the songs and maturity about it, "says Mike Gauthier.

Of shows in the U.S.?

The next few months will therefore be busy for Bobby Bazini. It will be promoting in the United States, thirty concerts are on its agenda in Quebec and his team organized the release of the album in Europe in the fall.

All this could be accompanied by concerts in the United States.

"The plan is to play me in the first part of an artist there," reveals Bazini.

"The most important medium is the Internet", says Nicolas Asselin Desbiens

Nicolas Asselin Desbiens is a Canadian Producer.
In this interview, he talks about the labels and gives us his point of view in relation to illegal downloading.

Espace-Citizen: What is special about labels?

Nicolas Asselin Desbiens: Labels are trying to defend a niche for programming artists. For now, the labels are the only way to succeed in a career, regionally, nationally or internationally.

E-C: How the labels  argues artists?

NAD: The labels are responsible for the artist to offer an interesting promotional framework. For this, the labels use flyers and internet. For promotion on the internet, the label allows artists to make video clips that can be visible on the net.

At the moment, they work a lot on the booking, looking for gigs. They also try to export a maximum of artists under the label and booking agency in and outside.

EC: How did you adapted to the new technologies of information and communication (ICT)?

NAD: Today, the most important medium is the Internet. Using our graphic designer, we have constituted websites. On these sites you can view videos of artists and listen to samples of their songs. We also find information on artists like bios and links to their personal websites.

In addition, our sites are a continuity with the Myspace community network. On the one hand, Myspace allows musicians to come into contact with each other. On the other hand, it allows labels to communicate with some artists. From listening, if we like the song, it sends an email to the artist. By this means, we have achieved some collaborations with artists of our label "A song A place."

EC: Illegal downloading you there prejudice?

NAD: Currently, due to the relatively small size of some labels and booking agency, illegal downloading does not really pose problems. It’s more for the big labels that’s a major problem. Indeed, the only way for the labels and the artists make money is to benefit from copyright. The artist pockets the majority of authors for its music rights. The labels receive a small percentage of copyright on each song of each artist rights. In this way, the labels is paid for the work he provides to the artist.

EC: Is it a choice not to offer paid or free download on your website?

NAD: Yes, it is a deliberate prevent downloading of titles available on the site choice. It is a way to invite people to come and buy the cd in stores or at concerts. If the download was allowed on our sites, the public would not go on iTunes or in stores to buy the albums. In fact, people would have albums in them and therefore, they would put them directly onto their iPod, Mp3, ...

In the future, we would like to create a platform for paid downloads like iTunes to sell music artists.

Mysterious comeback album of Pink Floyd?

Fans of progressive rock and Pink Floyd have fallen below their chair last week when they learned that the British band's 15th studio album launch in October. An unexpected and totally unexpected especially hard.

Cirque du Soleil - Worlds Away: bet half successful not for Nicolas Asselin Desbiens

Cirque du Soleil invites us to dive into the magical and mysterious world in the imaginary journey. Shot in 3D by a team of pros - Andrew Adamson realization and James Cameron co-production, which has even shot some scenes - the film made the bet, half successful, to tell a story without words, which takes place in a fantasy world. The movie has been co-produce by Media Imaginaire. Nicolas Asselin Desbiens, chairman of the company said the work has been really difficult for each crew.

The movie follows Mia, a young woman on the trail of an acrobat she saw in a traveling circus. Both are engulfed in a parallel world and end up in a kind of desert where few are prepared capitals. Mia has a photo to show people she meets for her beautiful trapeze artist, and this quest will go into the different Cirque shows are presented in Las Vegas: O, Ka, LOVE, Zumanity, Mystery Chris Angel Believe and Viva Elvis.

True, the film approaches the infomercial luxury. But insofar as it does not indicate in what we show is that numbers are taken out of their context and the golf Mia does not proceed in a logical sequence, but rather the entire universe of Cirque Sun which is powered by the film. This lack of precision, far from being confused, gives an overview of the unique signature of Cirque alloy perfect between the human machine and the technology that supports it.

Mr Nicholas Asselin Desbiens expects the public will enjoy another time the Cirque du Soleil success story in cinema.

Paula...loosa... Failure album of Robin Thicke

Paula, the new album by Robin Thicke, was a total failure around the world. In the UK, he recorded only 530 copies sold in the first week, and a place at number 200 in the ranking of best-selling albums. In Canada, we talk a meager 550 copies, while at home, he would not have exceeded 25,000 copies.

The interpreter Blurred Lines had dedicated the album love songs to his wife, actress Paula Patton, whom he separated in February 2014 after almost nine years of marriage. However, it seems that the romantic gesture singer has not really touched a chord with his fans ...

The number of disappointing sales is far from the success of his latest album, Blurred Lines, which reached the first place of the charts.

Nicki Minaj...again!

Nicki Minaj made some barbed comments during her acceptance speech for her fifth consecutive win as Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards Sunday night that appeared to be directed toward Iggy Azalea.
After quasi-plugging her upcoming album The Pink Print, Minaj said, "What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it." Then she gestured in a way that seemed like she was locking her mouth and mugged at the audience. As the audience cheered, she said, "No, no, no, no, no shade," and smiled at Lil Wayne. The comment about writing her own verses seemed to address rumors that Azalea, who was nominated in the same category as Minaj, employed ghostwriters like T.I., according to Gawker.

A family affair for Nicolas Asselin Desbiens

A family affair, it's how Nicholas Asselin Desbiens talks about is way into music and events world. Since a decade, the man is appeal to play an important role is the family business who is famous for his involvement in culture.
Did you grow up in Montreal?
No, in fact, my family have property in eastern quebec where I grew up.
Did you study music?
No, not at all. In fact, I was most a political guy, as I studied in that field. But I always be aware about organizing shows and love music. That was my unknowing education in show business.
When someone says “that’s so Montreal!” what does that mean to you?
It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly Montreal culture is: it has many aspects to it. The fact that two great cultures can thrive side-by-side… when I was young I would watch Ed Sullivan and I would watch French TV shows from France as well. That really informed who I am and I think what Montreal is, too. The great mix of the two main cultures and the addition of so many immigrant groups makes for a very special cultural texture.
Where do you like hear live music in Montreal?
I go to concerts all the time. I still see between 300 and 400 concerts a year. My favourite concert hall in the city is Metropolis because I run it and it’s the best rock and roll hall in Canada. (laughs) Otherwise I like to go toThéâtre Corona Virgin Mobile, to the new Symphony hall. The Salle Bourgie inside the old church facing Musée des Beaux-Arts for me is a total jewel of new construction in the city. I must have seen about 20 concerts there already. And the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. I’m not a big theatre buff but whenever there’s something that looks good there I make a point of going to see it because the theatre is so fantastic.
Is there a signature Montreal style when it comes to music?
No, it’s pretty diverse. On one side you have the whole Mile End indie scene. On the French side, you have the whole tradition of chansonniers, singer-songwriters, and rockers as well. But it’s very diversified. There’s no such thing as a Quebecois song. It’s hard to pinpoint Montreal culture; it’s the same with Quebecois music. It’s a synthesis of many things.
Nicolas Asselin Desbiens is really into a family affair in the field of music!

Lou Reed leaves $30m fortune

Lou Reed has proved to be more profitable in death than in life, with his estate having been swelled by $20.4m since his death, in addition to the money distributed in his will.
According to documents lodged with Manhattan Surrogate Court by Reed's manager Robert Gotterer, the singer's estate totals $30m , with two-thirds of that having been gathered by Gotterer since Reed's death at the age of 71 last year.
The New York Post reports that the additional money "is likely from Reed’s copyright and publishing interests, which, in his will, he instructed Gotterer to treat as his own".
The main beneficiary of Reed's will is his wife, Laurie Anderson, to whom he left his $7m( £4m) Manhattan apartment, as well as a $1.5m (£880,000) property in the exclusive Hamptons area of Long Island. She will also receive $15m of the money Gotterer collected.
Reed left his sister Margaret Reed Weiner $500,000 to care for their mother, but she will receive a further $5m from the money Gotterer collected.
The fortune left by Reed speaks of careful management, for he never had a breakout hit during his career. His biggest hit album in the US, 1974's Sally Can't Dance, reached no higher than No 10, and he stalled his commercial momentum by following it with Metal Machine Music, four sides of white noise.

Bellowhead: Revival

It's 10 years since Bellowhead first assembled, during which time they've gone on to become not just the most successful folk act in Britain, but a genuinely big band – they headlined the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year.
Their new album, Revival, sees them getting in touch with the British folk revival of the early 1970s – it's being released on Island's Pink label, famous for releasing key albums by Fairport Convention, Nick Drake and John Martyn.
So how does it match up? Have a listen and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Music Singer in top 100

Beyoncé is already the queen of pop music, but now she's the queen of pop culture. The singer has claimed the top spot on Forbes' new Celebrity 100 list, which ranks the most successful celebrities from "movies, TV, music, sports, books and modeling based on money and fame." Dominant Miami Heat forward LeBron James stakes out the second spot, with hip-hop mogul Dr. Dre rounding out the top three.
Forbes estimate earnings for the Celebrity 100 by speaking with "lawyers, producers, agents and other in-the-know folks." Fame is measured based on a number of specifics: the number of times each individual's name was mentioned in print, on TV and radio; their social media StarCount scores; and an "impact score," which "measures the impact each celebrity has on the entertainment industry and our culture overall." Those numbers are combined into an algorithm to determine the final list.
Based on those criteria, Bey is the logical choice to top the list. Over the past year, the pop phenom played a total of 95 concerts, generating an average of $2.4 million per night, according to Pollstar. She also released her surprise "visual album," Beyoncé, which featured a music video for each of the LP's 14 tracks (including the platinum-selling, surfboard-riding single "Drunk in Love").
But as Forbes notes, her domination spread into more areas than just music. Based on her many business ventures, the singer earned an estimated $115 million between June 1st, 2013 and June 1st, 2014, generated in part by major endorsement deals with H&M and Pepsi, original fragrance lines and a clothing company called House of Dereon. (As for husband Jay Z? He follows behind at the not-too-shabby sixth spot, with an estimated $60 million.)
James brought in an estimated $72 million at the Number Two spot, based on his earnings with the Miami Heat and endorsement deals with the likes of Coke and McDonald's. And following at Number Three is musically reclusive but financially dominant rapper-producer Dr. Dre, who set a new record for yearly earnings in the Celebrity 100 list. Dre brought in a cool $620 million, following Apple's $3 billion purchase of the Beats by Dre headphone line.
Numerous musicians made the list, including Rihanna (#8), Katy Perry (#9), Bon Jovi and Bruno Mars (tied for 13) and Miley Cyrus (#17).

Janis Joplin Stamp Artwork Unveiled

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone reported on a series of musical stamps coming out this year that took years of planning to come to fruition. Now that the Jimi Hendrix stamp has been officially released as the first offering of the United States Postal Service's Music Icons series, the agency has unveiled the official stamp for the series' next star Janis Joplin.
According to Linn's Stamp News, the stamp will be released this August and will feature the singer smiling and wearing shades surrounded by a psychedelic background and lettering evoking the popular font of the Sixties.
A biographical description on the sheet of 16 stamps says: "Janis Joplin (1943-1970) was a groundbreaking singer whose powerful, bluesy voice propelled her to the pinnacle of rock stardom. An icon of the 1960s, she was known for her uninhibited and soulful performances. Joplin is now recognized as one of the greatest rock singers of all time, as well as a pioneer who paved the way for other women in rock music."
No information on the specific date and location of the stamp issue has been announced.
Joplin, who would have turned 71 this year, and Hendrix are the latest subjects to join the Music Icons series, which had previously honored Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Tejano songstress Lydia Mendoza in 2012.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that more musicians may appear on a U.S. stamp, including John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Bill Monroe, Sarah Vaughan and Tammy Wynette. There are also plans for an issue honoring James Brown and a re-release of the 1993 Elvis Presley stamp for 2015.
Susan McGowan, the USPS director of stamp services, told Rolling Stone that 2015 should see a departure from rock & roll, but declined to reveal which genre will be its focus. "I definitely see that we need to pay a little honor to some other genres that haven't been covered," she says. "For example, jazz is something that will be in the foreseeable future, or Motown and types of music that we need to recognize."
